The phone rang early this morning. It was a middle aged friend of ours telling us that she and her husband were considering buying a small business. The husband had worked for the business for fifteen years and really enjoyed his job. She had been employed there for two years and really enjoys her job. They are a beautiful hard-working couple that is ready to work harder than they have ever worked in their lives. The current owners are retiring, but are willing to work with the couple to help them solve any problems that arise. Yet, they are scared. The world is telling them that now is not the time to buy a business.
The first advice that we gave them was to remember who they are. They are the salt of the world. Both have not had the best of life, but they have really transformed their lives. They have become shining examples of what people are supposed to be. They have learned to live free from condemnation from their past mistakes. They are active in the community and understand that to change the next generation they must be the light of the world.
So what was holding them back? Fear caused by listening to the world. The world was telling them that now was not the time to buy a business. Fear was telling them that because of their past mistakes they did not have the skills necessary to own a business. Fear said that they would fail to meet the current owner’s expectations, and they dearly love the current owners. Fear also told them of what the current employees would think. Fear said that they would not have enough money. Fear had taken over their lives.
The next bit of advice that we gave them was to make a list of all the things that they had accomplished in their lives. Then we encouraged them to make a list of what they needed to do to accomplish the task. Put the list in order of what must be done. Having a clear plan is important to conquering any problem. Then we asked them to picture themselves as successful owners of the business and what their lives would look like with the new freedom. Suddenly, they had the courage to overcome their fear. They could see a clear path to victory.
Will it be a smooth path for them? Probably it will not be a smooth path as any small business owner can tell them. What is important though is the process. First, they remembered who they were. They then were able make a list of past victories. Next, they were able to make a clear plan to accomplish their goal. Finally, they were able to picture the victory at the end of the path.
If fear is holding your small business hostage, then you need to determine who you are listening to. Many times we must answer that we are listening to our fears instead of our calling. What steps do you need to take to overcome the fears that are holding your small business back? Remember the times that you were victorious. Make a plan to attack the problem. Then picture the victory at the end. Then get busy.
