Erectile Dysfunction (ED) or also commonly known as impotency is when a man is unable to have an erection or have weak erections or is unable to sustain a hard erection long enough to have gratifying sex. This is a very common male ailment and it is estimated that more than 40% of men will suffer this syndrome sometime in their life and some of them permanently.
Although erectile dysfunction can cause stress, embarrassment or even depression in some men, it is not a threatening medical condition by itself. However, it can be an ominous warning sign that there may be some underlying serious medical conditions such as some cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, diabetes and hypogonadism (which may be the cause of ED itself because of its association with low levels of testosterone).
There are many causes for men developing erectile dysfunction and these can be traced to either physiological or psychological causes or both. Physiological causes are as a result of some body malfunction that limits blood circulation to the penile area to effectuate hard or lasting erections. If your cause of ED is because of physiological conditions, then you will have to take some medical tests to see if there are any serious medical conditions that are preventing you from having harder erections.
Where psychological reasons are concerned, then the underlying reasons may not be as serious a medical threat as the physiological ones. However, they may still warrant some medical treatments or counseling to resolve the psychological issues such as stress, fear of underperformance, depression and others.
If you think that you are suffering from erectile dysfunction, then start your diagnosis and treatment by visiting your doctor to have some tests taken to see if you have any other underlying medical conditions which may be life threatening. Your physician will also conduct tests for cardiovascular problems like peripheral vascular disease or coronary artery disease besides the others mentioned above. Your doctor will further analyze your lifestyle because excessive smoking, alcohol or drug abuse and even lack of exercise can also cause impotency.
The good news is that there are many treatments and even cures for erectile dysfunction victims. For some, simple lifestyle changes like avoiding fatty food, losing weight, quitting smoking or alcohol consumption or starting a regular exercise program is enough to treat ED and even reverse the condition oftentimes permanently.
If you are suffering from low testosterone level, you may be advised to undergo testosterone replacement therapy. Some people who are uncomfortable with such therapies may want to try out vigorous exercises and gym workouts because it is known that intensive exercise can raise your own testosterone production naturally.
Then for those with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular or blood circulation problems amongst others, you will have these conditions treated as well.
There are also non prescriptive herbs and erection pills made from natural herbs such as Saw Palmetto, Horny Goat Weed, Panax Ginseng, Tongkat Ali just to name a few in the market to help you to produce more of your own natural testosterone or to help your blood circulation to give you harder erections. Of course, if you are comfortable with prescription medicines albeit its unwanted side effects, then you may be prescribed with oral treatment drugs such as Vigara, Cialis or Levitra.
Although there are many treatments and erectile dysfunction pills available in the market without prescription, it is still better to visit your doctor first to suss out any other medical conditions that are giving you erectile dysfunction and preventing you from having harder erections. From there, you can take an educated choice of the options available.
