Poker’s origins can be traced to a number of different games, all of which involve cards of different rankings or combinations of dominos. The earliest variations of the game also involved an element of “bluffing”, and this aspect survives in modern poker to this very day.

A few accounts trace the origins of poker to China, where an early version of the game was supposedly played by Emperor Mu-tsung using “domino cards”. Egypt was also the setting for another early version of the game, where a primitive form of playing cards was widely used during the 12th and 13th centuries. In Persia, there were also quite a few card-based betting games making the rounds in the 16th century. Many of these games, such as “As Nas” for example, used cards with specific rankings.

Two versions of the game also developed in France and Germany, both of which were derived from a game played in 16th century Spain called “Primero”. Both games also relied heavily on bluffing and making high bets, further cementing its lineage to modern day poker.

The French version of the game subsequently made its way to Canada via emigrants to the New World. From there, the game made its way to New Orleans, from where it spread throughout America.

By the time the Wild West period of American history came about, almost every saloon in the country had a poker table. The game achieved even wider popularity during the Civil War, when soldiers on both sides enjoyed the game on a regular basis. With the introduction of the Joker wild card in 1875, the game had shed virtually all vestiges of its European heritage and was basically an American game from then on.

Today, there are three variants of the game played most often throughout the country. These are 5 Card Draw, 7 Card Stud, and Texas Hold’em. In addition, there are numerous other variations such as Omaha, Stud Poker, Draw Poker and Razz. In spite of the marginal popularity of these and other poker variants however, No Limit Texas Hold’em remains one of the most popular forms of the game around. In fact, the game played at The World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour is No Limit Hold’em. The televised coverage of such high profile events has made the popularity of the game spread even further and wider, and it is arguably the most popular version of the card game all over the world.

Not that poker needs a popularity boost. It is after all already the most popular card game around, enjoyed in various countries throughout the world. And with poker rooms having become all the rage in the online world, poker has managed to make its way to players who wouldn’t have otherwise picked up the game at all.
