Circumcision surgery is a procedure that removes the foreskin from a penis so that the head is exposed. This surgery is more common in certain cultures and religions than others. In the United States, around 50 percent of newborn boys are circumcised. In European countries, the rate is as low as 1 percent. Circumcision is an encouraged practice among followers of Islam and is required under Jewish religious law.

Today, circumcision is not considered necessary as a routine operation on newborns and the decision to have the operation is left up to the baby’s parents. Newborns usually have the procedure performed within a few days of birth, before being sent home from the hospital. However, circumcision surgery can be performed at any age. Some adult males undergo circumcision for medical reasons or as a personal choice.

Reasons for supporting circumcision include following customs, not wanting to look different from peers, and perceived health benefits. There is evidence that babies who undergo the procedure have fewer urinary tract infections during the first five years of life. Adult males can have the procedure performed in an outpatient center and resume normal activities soon after. Circumcision surgery does not require any down time from work in order to recover. There is mild pain and itching that subsides within a day or two. Men should refrain from sexual activity until the wound has completely healed in order to prevent rupture of a suture.

Circumcision is a minor surgical procedure than can be performed quickly and carries few risks and complications. One risk is that adult males may not be happy with the appearance of their penis after surgery. Different surgical styles result in different looks. Scarring is usually not a problem unless the incision was made too far away from the glans. Other rare but possible complications include excessive bleeding and infection of the wound.

Babies are routinely given the procedure before being discharged from the hospital and are sent home for recovery. Little follow-up care is needed other than keeping the wound clean by washing it at least three times daily with mild soap and water and keeping an eye out for the development of infection.

Within ten days, the baby should be fully recovered from circumcision surgery. The wound will heal in about the same amount of time for adult males but it may take weeks to become fully adjusted to the change in sensations caused by removing the foreskin.
