As much as we don’t admit to it, we are a society in which looks are of high importance. You just need to look at the magazines on offer and the adverts on television to realise that maintaining your youthful look is something we all strive to do. We want to get rid of wrinkles, keep thighs toned and, particularly for men, avoid losing your hair. Revolutionary new ideas have made the once impossible seem all the more possible.

Hair loss is one of those things that all men dread; it’s like a sign stuck on top of your head that says ‘I’m not the virile young stallion I once was’. It’s also a touchy subject, I once made the error of saying to my dad ‘would you like me to put some sun cream on your bald spot?’ and the response I got was ‘don’t be so cheeky’ with a few expletives peppered throughout. However, a short while after that conversation with my dad, a friend of mine was diagnosed with leukaemia and when, through chemotherapy, she lost her hair I wouldn’t have dreamed of mocking her. That’s when it hit me hair loss must be an awful thing to go through, no matter what means it’s done by; chemotherapy, alopecia or simply aging.

Confidence is often something that is key in getting on in life and, I feel, that I’m at my most confident and approachable when I look my best and I’m sure many agree. This has led to increasing numbers of men, and women, choosing to have a hair transplant in order to restore their youthful looks.

One of the leading forms of hair transplant surgery is follicular transplant; this is a minimally invasive procedure and causes little disruption to the patient’s schedule. There was a time when men would avoid having any form of cosmetic surgery as it’s seen as shallow- but now with more and more of the celebrity greats, such as Tom Jones, choosing to be physically enhanced why not join the club?

With the metrosexual culture growing ever more popular and it being ‘acceptable’ for men to take care over their appearance with the introduction of guyliner and manscara, it seems that there eyebrows won’t necessarily be raised if an aging man chose to regain his youthful looks through a hair transplant. After all, more and more women are getting liposuction and breast enhancements to look their best; it would be completely sexist to say men shouldn’t do what they feel necessary to make them feel their best.
