Wearing a tie is important in many situations but in order for it to look dapper and dashing, you must know how to tie it correctly. Two of the best ways to tie a tie are the Windsor knot and the half Windsor knot. These are very neat knots which give a formal appearance without being uncomfortable. They are easy to tie and appropriate for any situation.

Both of these styles stem from the Dukedom of Windsor and British soldiers in general. It was a trade mark of Great Britain that neck ties were a part of proper uniform and the color and design of the tie was determined by your regiment.

How to tie a Windsor Knot
To tie a Windsor knot, follow these simple instructions. Arrange your tie so that the wide end is about a foot below the thin end. Wrap the wide side around the thin side and then bring the wide part up through the loop created. Then let it hang down again. Wrap the wide side around the thin then up through the loop again. Finish the knot by pulling the wide end through the knot. Work upwards to tighten. These simple instructions will create a professional look that will be impressive for many events.

How to tie a Half Windsor Knot
If you find that your tie is a bit too short to achieve a full Windsor knot consider a half Windsor knot. Start with the wide side on left and cross it over the thin side. The wide side should be on top. Now wrap underneath the crossed section while holding the thin side. Make a right facing loop and adjust by pulling wide side through the middle while pushing upward. This knot is as appropriate as the full Windsor knot and gives an equally tidy feel to your appearance.

Both of these will achieve a fabulous look and once you learn how to tie your tie you will never forget. Consider practicing by placing the tie on an inanimate object. Make sure that you place the tie so that the knot will be facing away from you so that it will truly be like putting on your own tie. This will allow you to watch and memorize the steps you need to take. After you have successfully tied a Windsor or half Windsor knot several times place the tie around your neck and try it out on you. If you fail to tie the tie correctly do not get frustrated simply try again. It may take several tries to be successful, but if you have a great deal of trouble go back to practicing on an item for awhile. You will eventually catch on.

Do not let a bad tie job ruin your appearance. These steps are easy to follow and produce two the most common and tidiest looking knots available. You need never feel helpless or out of step because of a tie again. You will be capable of tying your own tie or that of a friend because you will know the steps necessary and be practiced at the application of said steps. Try it today and see for yourself how easy it can be.
