In an increasingly image conscious world it seems that the list of available treatments and products aimed a making you look good grows longer by the day. And whereas they might once have been aimed mainly at women, the list now includes many aimed specifically at men.

Facials and massages designed for men as well as hair removal, waxing and skin peels are all now widely available in most towns and cities. Even minor surgical procedures are no longer considered taboo subjects for men. Botox injections and the odd nip or tuck, it seems, are as commonplace as a moisturizing.

But in the midst of all these new ideas and processes there is one particular problem that men have been trying to find a solution to for as long as they’ve been looking in the mirror; hair loss. Hair transplant, hair replacement and hair restoration have all received more interest in the last few years as the male grooming industry has grown.

Recently the embarrassment and ridicule surrounding hair replacement has been largely extinguished. In part this is down to the industry making leaps and bounds in the science and technology behind any surgical procedures. The hair replacement operation is now safer and more successful than it has ever been. Having famous names openly admit to the procedure has also had a positive impact.

When John Cleese recently appeared on a TV chat show and admitted to having hair replacement treatment he joined a growing list of well known men who are turning to surgery rather than reluctantly sit back and let nature do its worst.

Sir Elton John, the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the magician Paul Daniels cricketers Graham Gooch and Shane Warne have all openly admitted to having hair replacement treatment.

Hair replacement surgery is performed for all sorts of reasons and on both men and women. It can be used for eyebrows and facial hair but it’s the condition of male baldness that is creating the most demand. It’s the option favoured by men who have exhausted every other avenue.

The hair replacement procedure starts with an initial consultation where the doctor or surgeon examines the scalp to verify whether the treatment is in fact suitable for the patient. At this point expectations will also be discussed. If everything is satisfactory at this point the surgery can go ahead.

It is important that the patient is fit and healthy. If they are not the hair loss may be down to something more serious than just the ageing process. The consultation should flag up any problems like this. Before the surgery the patient must not drink alcohol or be on medication for any other problems. This cuts down any risk and improves the surgery’s chances of being a success.

Usually the hair replacement surgery is performed under mild sedation and the patient is well enough to leave the clinic or hospital shortly after the surgery is over.

The surgeon will typically take a strip of skin from the back of the scalp where there is healthy hair and harvest the good follicles from this. He will then use a fine needle to puncture the area where the follicles are to be planted. How the follicles are positioned and placed will already have been discussed and will determine what the new hair will look like when it is finally established.

Although the hair that is transplanted will fall out shortly after the surgery there is nothing to worry about. If the hair replacement procedure is successful and the post operative care has been good then the hair will grow back shortly afterwards.

Ladies ! Are you stuck for what to buy your husband or partner for Christmas? Do you want to keep him happy or even win him back ! Here are a few ideas for you, from a mans point of view, that will keep him happy for ages and maybe even he will be so happy as to help with the housework as well !

So, here goes, here is my list in no particular order. Some are expensive but some are not.

1. A new flat screen TV. Men love watching a good film and of course sport on TV. So, what better to watch his favourite TV programmes on the latest wide screen TV. The good thing about this Christmas gift is that it is a double whammy, because as all women know, men love new technology and gadgets. Men will love unpacking the box and setting it up and they will spend ages deciding where the best place for the speakers is. After all that exitement it is then time to watch the TV. Action films especially look much better on a big television and if you turn the volume up it is like being at the cinema. Having this new toy will stop him going to the pub with his mates and he will become more romantic towards you as a result. The is the number one ideal gift.

2. Already have a big flat screen TV ? The answer is then to buy a Blue-Ray DVD player. These high definition DVD players are brilliant. The improvement in quality over traditional DVD players is incredible. Films come to life and the detail and clarity of the picture is infinate. Combine this DVD player with a cinema surround sound Hi-Fi speaker system and you will make his face light up with joy, and he will do the same everytime he sees his wonderful new cinema system sitting in the corner of the room.

3. A subscription to Sky Sports. As all women know, most men love watching sport on TV. We can get emotionally involved in any sport on TV regardless of whether it is our team and even if we have never seen the sport before. The reason for this is that all men secretly want to be sporting superstars, but because most men start drinking instead and also because they were discovering girls just at the age boys should be spending all the time training to be a sporting superstar, then most men failed to fulfil their dream. However, the sportman inside every man still lays dormant. So, if you cannot play sport the next best thing is to watch it on TV. Do not forget as well, that it has been in mens genes since the stone age that we are competitive. Back then, we had to run for our lives from the dinasoars whilst we were out finding food. Since then we have always been good runners !

4. Golf Club Memebership.. Are you looking for some time to yourself ? Maybe you ladies want time to go shopping or take a visit to the beauty salon, but have always felt guilty that your husband is at home and you cannot justify spending the money. Well, what could be better than a golf club membership. Prices vary but on average I would say they cost about 600 pounds a year plus possibly a joining fee. Bear in mind that playing a round of golf takes about 4 hours plus the time in the bar afterwards. This time in the bar is spent discussing every hole and where they went wrong, so it can be some time before they leave the bar ! You can allow, therefore, nearly a full day out for your husband or partner including the travelling time, which means that you will have plenty of time to wander around the shops.

5. Can’t afford the golf club membership ? How about a few golf lessons ? Most men spend more time telling their mates that next time they will play better and that they have discovered where they are going wrong. In practise though it is not possible to improve at golf without taking a few lessons. You can improve by playing more, but if a golf player cannot figure out where they are going wrong the only way you can improve is by having golf lessons. After only six lessons you can become a better player.

6. A case of wine I think this is a really good christmas present. Most men love a good beer but drinking wine makes them more intelligent. Well,it makes them look more intelligent ! six reds and six whites is what is needed. If he does not drink red wine then it is about time he did and its good for the heart meaning your beloved will live longer.

7. Another great gadget at number 7 on my list. Are you fed up with seeing all those old videos in a huge pile in your living room? Well, how about a VCR to PC machine ? This machine will convert all his old videos to DVD. It could be all your old wedding videos, holiday videos or even the kids Disney classics. It is a simple to use device which converts everything to digital format so that you can either store everything on a PC or burn them onto a blank DVD. This will keep your man busy for hours !

8. A Beer Machine This is every mans dream come true - beer for less than 50 pence a pint. Simply pour in the powder mix, add water and yeast and then wait for 7 to 10 days for it to ferment. This machine will even fit in your fridge and it will keep him and his mates happy for ages. Makes perfect beer for help in watching sport on TV !

9. T-shirts Men love t-shirts. It is because they are so versatile. In summer men love wearing t-shirts and in winter men love wearing t-shirts too. Some very tough men can wear t-shirts in winter without even a jacket but most men wear a t-shirt in winter underneath a thicker shirt. It is important that at least two buttons on the normal shirt are undone so that the t-shirt can be seen underneath. This, most men believe makes then look more rugged and manly !

10. A Nano-Copter. This is the worlds smallest and lightest radio-controlled helicopter. It can soar up to 10 metres and is great fun. Men love their toys and after gadgets something like this mini helicopter is brilliant and it will keep them amused for hours. It can be used inside or outside and it will amaze old men and boys alike. Any man would be proud to have this given to him at Christmas. This type of present makes us men wish that we had been fighter pilots in the RAF and makes us think that because we can fly a toy radio controlled helicopter then we must be able to fly a real one !

Back when I was young, a long time ago, mens skin care products generally consisted of shaving cream. Skin care for men wasn’t heard of, and men couldn’t have cared less.

Now mens skincare products are hot, and selling extremely well, and for good reason. Mens fashion/grooming is part of the new paradigm for men.

All those years ago things were different. Men were men. They ate a lot of steak, went camping and shooting a lot and only visited the doctor if they were about to die. Mens skin care? What was that? I use shaving cream don’t I?

Mens fashion was a new pair of jeans. And maybe a new pair of boots every now and then, when their toes were showing through the old ones. To go with the new pair of jeans.

Men’s grooming, and mens fashion, and for that matter mens health, have come a long way. I, for one, now visit the doctor regularly for checkups, keep fit, and take care of my skin with good quality mens skincare products. My father has had skin cancer and I need to take care of my skin as much as anyone.

That’s not because I want to keep up with the latest mens fashion, I’m way too old for fashion. It’s because I recognise that taking care of our skin, for a man, is a health issue. For my part, after being burned many times before anyone even knew how bad sunburn was for the skin, taking care of my skin now may prevent fatal skin cancer.

It’s never too late.

Mens skin care is also about looks though for many modern men. Mens fashion in the 21st century is also about anti aging and youthful looks, like it is for women.

It’s not good enough now for men to use a good shaving cream, buy themselves a new pair of jeans every other year, and eat steak every second night.

There’s now available a wide range of high quality mens grooming and anti aging and skin care products. Men can take care of their hair with good hair care products, nail care products help take care of their nails, and good skin care products help men take care of their skin. Mens grooming products are slowly catching up to womens grooming products with increasing sales and increased quality.

However note that I said “high quality” skin care products for men.

The “high quality” part is extremely important. There are many skin care and anti aging products on the market that are not “high quality”. Unfortunately big brand name mens skin care products and mens anti aging products share many characteristics with popular womens anti aging products.

They don’t work very well, or at all, and are overpriced, often by necessity to pay for all that overhyped TV advertising using highly paid big name stars. But worst of all, many of the ingredients used in skin care products in general can be suspect or downright harmful to our health, and skin. And that includes popular mens skin care products too.

Luckily there are companies that are producing highly effective and very cost competitive natural skin care products, including mens anti aging products.

And they are highly cost competitive too, primarily because these companies don’t spend up big on TV advertising, which is why you’ve probably never heard of them. They produce natural skin care products using natural non toxic ingredients, and these include natural mens skin care products and mens anti aging products.

So if you’re a man, or for that matter a woman who knows a man who needs to take better care for his skin, rejoice. There are excellent natural mens skincare products available, no toxic that work extremely well.

And modern men are using them more and more, and seeing the difference.

What is confidence? It is something we can present to the world without really feeling it or is it something that we have to dig deep to find? Is it something that comes and goes or is it a static condition? Confidence is one of those elements that carries the potential to really mess with a guy’s head. There might be times when he is feeling totally confident and has the ability to really let his personality shine through and then there are other times when he feels totally intimidated and he isn’t comfortable speaking.

Confidence that isn’t night and day sticks around because you are comfortable in your own skin. Anyone who is really comfortable with who they are and what they are all about remains confident in almost any situation. The beauty of confidence is that there is a magic trick to finding it and that magic trick can be done in our own homes late at night without anyone else’s intrusion. There is no magic confidence boosting pill and there is no herbal supplement that will bring out your full scale confidence. Instead, there is a simple exercise that can help anyone find a little more comfort in who they are and what they are all about.

When you are experiencing confidence, even if it is fleeting, then you know how empowering it can be. When your confidence level rises your basic performance ability, regardless of what it is, enhances and you live better. When you aren’t experiencing confidence you are chronically second guessing yourself and eventually you can talk yourself out of every good idea you have ever had.

Part of developing confidence is knowing that even if things don’t turn out the way we want them to, we are still just fine. Confident people understand that if they mess up, their entire world is not going to fall apart but that they are simply going to have to either try again or try a totally different approach to getting what they want. When you know that you aren’t going to worry about what other people might think and what other people are judging about you, then you become free from the constraint of worrying about making mistakes or striking out.

When you are no longer plagued by worrying about it, then you go ahead and move forward with complete confidence. Obtaining such a level of self acceptance and belief can happen for anyone. All too often too many men believe that they can’t change or that the goals of really developing the skills that lead to a better understanding of themselves and a happier life are just too far out of reach.

Anyone can grab the brass ring if they want to. Anyone who wants to lean out just a little further and a little further has the potential to develop self induced success. Just like everything else in life, it is just one simple step at a time.

Ultimately confidence comes from within, but that doesn’t mean that most of us still don’t need a little external evidence that can help pull their confidence level up. Just like when we all learned to walk, we started with a few hesitant steps and because we received positive reinforcement and removed negative reinforcement at the same time, we took a few more steps and a few more until we were running around like everyone else.

In this case you want to remove the negative reinforcement while seeking out the positive reinforcement. That means you want to approach women and start speaking, hopefully with enough conviction, enthusiasm, and interesting topics to receive the positive reinforcement we are looking for. She either holds our conversation well or we end up with her phone number, or whatever other positive reinforcement we find during our conversation. This is the easier part.

The harder part is removing the negative reinforcement through the same exercise. Let’s say you approach a woman and she isn’t interested. Let’s even go so far as to say that she is single and looking but you said something way out of line or you offended her somehow. In order to remove the negative reinforcement we have to be able to walk away from that situation without being laden with negative emotions. It was just an opportunity to learn something.

When we are able to do this, we are able to move forward without a lot of hesitation or negative response conditioning because we know that even the worst case scenario can’t really shake us. In reality, what is the worst case scenario when trying to talk to a woman? She might actually laugh at us. Okay. What does that mean to me? Really it doesn’t mean anything. It means that she wasn’t worth my time or my energy in the first place so I can approach a woman and ultimately be laughed at walk away and know that I am still who I am.

Of course, it is not easy to develop confidence that draws from a core knowing of your own personal sense of self. We often derive these feelings from external sources. The happiest guys can get it from within, but that is a long practiced skill, one generally taught by parents at a young age. From the time we were little we were taught to look toward external source for confirmation of being a good and decent person. So we have also been taught that looking to a woman’s reaction is a direct reflection upon us somehow. We don’t have to decide that this is true. We can maintain our confidence in the face of being turned down and even mocked and laughed at.

Confidence is not a prepackaged formula that you can swallow and take down. It is developed over time with a conscious effort to keep your core personality at the heart of who you are. Some guys keep their standards very low while they work up the confidence to raise them while others simply shoot for the best and try to remain intact regardless of the outcome.
